Strengthening Waste Management: Supporting Model Micro Compost Centres

Effective waste management is critical for building cleaner and more sustainable cities. In line with this, Key Foundation has been actively supporting the Tiruchirappalli City Corporation in enhancing the efficiency of Micro Compost Centres (MCCs) across the city. These centres play a vital role in processing organic waste locally, reducing the burden on landfills and promoting environmentally responsible waste disposal practices.

To improve the functioning of these units, Key Foundation has deployed trained staff to strengthen operations and create Model MCCs that can serve as benchmarks for replication. These model centres demonstrate best practices in waste segregation, composting processes, and operational management, ensuring higher efficiency and better quality compost output. The initiative focuses on streamlining workflows, improving handling techniques, and maintaining hygiene and safety standards within the units.

A key aspect of this effort is capacity building of sanitation workers and MCC staff. Through on-site support and practical guidance, workers are trained in scientific composting methods, proper segregation of waste, and safe handling practices. This not only enhances their skills but also improves their working conditions and dignity, recognizing their crucial role in urban sanitation systems.
