In many communities that we work in, tailoring has been a common occupation among women Self Help Group (SHG) members. While the enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit were strong, most women lacked access to professional training and advanced machinery, confining them to basic stitching tasks, which restricted their income potential. The gap between retail tailoring and industrial production was stark—especially in terms of professional finish, speed, and ability to attract bulk orders. To address this gap, Key Foundation initiated a tailored intervention focused on upskilling and enterprise development. The project began by identifying and engaging SHG members interested in scaling their tailoring businesses. Field coordinators personally met with women who were either already involved or keen to start tailoring as a livelihood. Those with basic skills were enrolled in an intensive fast-track training programs. Currently, 43 trained women have become active members of the tailoring HUB. The HUB’s core objective is to increase SHG members’ income by transitioning from seasonal, low-volume orders to regular bulk industrial orders. It focuses on improving production quality to reduce rejections and boosting efficiency to increase output and, consequently, earnings.
At the heart of the HUB lies the Incubation Center—a shared facility equipped to support individual entrepreneurs. It provides end-to-end assistance: from order procurement and member training to quality checks, timely dispatches, and financial and inventory recordkeeping. This central system allows women entrepreneurs to focus on production while benefiting from structured support for operations and logistics.
To ensure sustainability, Key Foundation provided initial support by deploying expert staff and setting up necessary Infrastructure. The foundation also facilitated access to machinery and working capital for the incubation center. The technical team from Key Foundation continues to offer handholding support in areas such as quality control, order management, financial tracking, and stock maintenance—gradually enabling the HUB to function as an independent, self-sustained unit. The program didn’t stop at technical support. Women were also oriented on occupational health, with a specific focus on vision care—regular eye camps were organized to ensure their ophthalmic well-being, a crucial aspect for those engaged in detailed stitching work.
Through this initiative, Key Foundation is enabling a transformation in grassroots tailoring enterprises—empowering women to evolve from small-scale tailors to skilled garment producers with access to mainstream markets and steady income opportunities.
