SANITATION

Access to safe sanitation is not achieved overnight—it is a journey. Often described as the “sanitation ladder,” this journey moves from open defecation to shared facilities and ultimately to individual household toilets.

Key Foundation has been supporting communities in Tiruchirappalli through each step of this transition. The initiative began by improving the use and management of community and public toilets, which serve as an important intermediate solution.

A unique aspect of this approach is the involvement of Self-Help Group (SHG) women as caretakers. With proper training and support, these women manage the facilities, ensuring cleanliness, maintenance, and better user experience. This has significantly increased trust and usage within communities.

However, shared facilities also presented challenges—particularly limited access during nighttime. This highlighted the need for more sustainable solutions.

To address this, Key Foundation has been supporting the construction of individual household toilets, especially for underprivileged families. This step represents the highest level of the sanitation ladder, providing privacy, safety, dignity, and round-the-clock access.

By guiding communities through each stage, Key Foundation is creating long-term improvements in sanitation, health, and quality of life.
